Chapter 15

The next few days pass quietly, almost with a feeling of an anti-climactic letdown. Rebecca and Paige heard nothing from Keith, which worried them. They heard, through the Skipton grapevine, that he had been forced to find lodging out of town at a small hotel. They weren’t all that surprised by this; they were aware Sarah had called on a few of her friends to make his stay as uncomfortable as possible. Erica reported in that the patrons of her bakery seemed to spread out more, taking up all the tables, leaving no space available for the young man when he came in to get his morning coffee.

The only person who befriended the newcomer was the mayor, and Hannah told Scott that the two of them spent a lot of time behind the mayor’s closed door. George was working hard on his computer, fishing for information regarding the paperwork that Keith had received from Mayor Duncan. Mavis kept Sarah well informed about the activities in Skipton, but all seemed quiet, though a feeling of anticipation hung in the air.

Rebecca was calm about the whole situation. She went about her activities and didn’t seem anxious like Paige thought she would be. Her simple answer to Paige’s inquiry had been “It’s in God’s hands,” and Paige decided to follow her sister’s example.

It was a cold afternoon, and her breath hung in the air as she returned their greeting.

“Classes out for the day, boys?”

The two of them laughed and assured her they were done with school for the day. Without being asked, they each grabbed an end of the crate that Paige was struggling with and helped her move it out of the main walkway.

“What’s in here, Paige?”

“Why don’t you help me, and we’ll find out together. It’s big and heavy, so I could use your strength. Kenny, grab the crowbar and we’ll start at your end. Jimmy help him push down, but watch your fingers. I don’t want either of you getting your hands jammed under the lid when we pry it off.”

The two boys jumped into action, working the crowbar like pros. In a matter of minutes, they loosened all four corners and were ready to lift the lid off the crate. With a nod from Paige, they did the honors and placed the lid leaning up against the wall. The three of them pushed aside the straw that was inside the crate, protecting the cargo. Paige was delighted when they lifted out the first of the railroad crossing signs. It looked even better here, out of the dingy light of the antique shop. She had a spot picked out where she wanted to hang it and couldn’t wait to display it.

The two boys continued to
